Born Again Christians Backing Bush
Now that the summer months and the political conventions are
over, the heat is on in the presidential elections. In a survey of people’s political attitudes
conducted just prior to Labor Day, we found that born again Christians and
evangelical Christians were soundly backing George Bush, even though almost as
many born again adults are registered Democrats as are registered
Republicans. Among the key findings of
the study were:
·
Among likely voters who are born again Christians, Bush led Gore
by better than a 2-to-1 margin. In
comparison, among likely voters who are not born again Christians, Gore held a
slim eight-point advantage.
·
Among born again voters who are likely to vote and who are
certain whom they will vote for in November, Bush leads Gore 71% to 28%, a
5-to-2 margin. Among the non-born again voters who are likely to vote and are
certain about whom they will support, Gore led Bush 53% vs. 45%.
·
Among the evangelicals who are likely to vote and are certain
whom they will vote for, Bush led Gore by more than a 6-to-1 margin.
·
Among Catholics, the race is a toss-up. Protestants are less divided: Bush leads Gore
by almost a 2-to-1 margin among those likely to vote and who know whom they
will support.
