Jesus is God and Man

Part 2 – 12/19/2004

Have you noticed how easily our lives get caught up in the routine, how our noses stay fixed to the daily grindstone?

Anne Ortlund:

You know how a sheep is. He keeps his head down and goes nibble, nibble, nibble.

Out of the corner of his eye he sees a new tuft of grass; he moves four inches right… nibble, nibble.

When have you seen a sheep climb a tree, check the horizons, see where he’s come from and where he wants to go, and climb down a strike out? Never.

Are you identifying with a sheep? Do you pretty much live with your head down?

Now it’s time to go to work…

Mustn’t forget to pick up the pants at the cleaners…

It’s five o’clock; wonder what I should fix for dinner…

It’s Thursday and my book’s due back to the library…

It’s five minutes till time for the school bus…

Nibble, nibble, nibble…?

What consumes you? Where are you going? Have you pinpointed your aim? Does your life have a specific target?

You know, deep inside, what you need.

Fix your eyes on Jesus.

Which is easier to believe? That Jesus is God or that He is Man?

Jesus Is Man

What would it be like to be in school with Jesus?

How do we know that Jesus is man?

  1. He had a human ________________ (Isa. 7:14-16; Matt. 1:23; Gal. 4:4)

  1. He showed human ________________ (Luke 2:52)

Notice the four human ways that Jesus grew:

1. __________________ 2. __________________ 3. __________________ 4. __________________

  1. He experienced human __________________.

-          Matt. 26:38

-          Mark 10:21; John 11:5; John 13:1; John 19:26-27

-          Mark 6:6

-          Mark 14:33

-          Mark 1:41

-          Mark 3:5

  1. He had human ____________________ and _____________________.

-          Matt. 4:2

-          John 19:28

-          Luke 22:44

-          Matt. 4:1-11

-          Luke 23:46

Jesus Is Fully God and Fully Man

Council of Chalcedon (451 AD) dealt with false teaching as to the nature of Jesus.

“[Jesus exists] in two natures which exist without confusion, without change, without division, without separation, the difference of the natures having been in no wise taken away by reason of the union, but rather the properties of each being preserved, and both concurring into one person.”

Define: Hypostatic Union

How did Jesus limit himself?

  1. Phil. 2:6-8
  2. John 11:1-6
  3. John 14:28
  4. Matt. 24:36

The idea of Jesus being limited and yet also being God is difficult to understand. This is one of those times when it’s good to realize that God is so much greater than we are that some of the truths about him are difficult for us to grasp.

Jesus did not lessen himself

Whose decision was it to be born a man, walk this earth, and die on a cross?

Key Personal Perspective

Philippians 2:5-11

What is Paul talking about?

What attitude is revealed in Jesus’ willingness to become a man? (vv. 3-4)

-          _____________________________________________________

-          _____________________________________________________

-          _____________________________________________________

-          _____________________________________________________

-          _____________________________________________________

The attitude is _____________________________.

As fully man, Jesus shows us that he __________________________ our needs.

As fully God, Jesus shows us that he can _____________________ our needs.

The life of Jesus was about serving others. Those who get close to him end up being more and more like him, wanting to serve others. Who needs your service in Jesus’ name this next week? It doesn’t have to be something big or noticeable.

Matthew 10:42 “And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.”
